Update and roll back versions: mates and panel

Mates and the dashboard have separate versions and rollback tools. Check which one you are changing and choose a time when it can be unavailable.

Open the dashboard → Mate Settings → select a mate → Versions. The upper section controls that mate; Admin Panel below controls the dashboard program.

Use Upgrade a mate, Return to the previous mate version or The panel’s own version. Compare data-recovery tools under Choose a backup or restore method.

Upgrade a mate

An upgrade or downgrade takes this mate offline. The page estimates 5–10 minutes; conversations and scheduled work may be interrupted. Export important work files first if needed, as a state backup does not include all work files.

Hermes mates create a state backup before updating; a failed backup stops the update. OpenClaw mates do not have this automatic step. Use the backup comparison to save needed data and check your backup before updating. Ask support if you are unsure of the mate type or backup scope.

  1. Check the mate’s name and Current version. Use Check Updates to refresh available versions if needed.
  2. Choose the target under Select version, then select Upgrade or Downgrade.
  3. Check the target version, tick I understand the service pauses during the upgrade and select Confirm.
  4. Wait for Status to change from running to done. Check the current version and mate status, then try a short conversation.

If status shows error, check the current version and logs and contact support before retrying.

Return to the previous mate version

After a successful upgrade, Local Backup Versions keeps the previous version for 5 days. Restoring uses that backup once and clears it. Free Up Space invalidates these backups for all mates.

  1. Check the version and days left, then select “Restore local backup …”.
  2. Read the interruption and backup-removal notice, tick the confirmation checkbox and select Confirm.
  3. Wait for the mate to restart, estimated at about 30 seconds. Check the version and working status again.

No backup available can mean it expired, was used or cleaned, or the upgrade did not succeed. State backups restore data and settings, not program versions. For Rollback failed, check container logs, collect a redacted error using Container logs and contact support.

The panel’s own version

These controls affect the dashboard, separately from mate upgrades.

ActionSteps and result
Upgrade PanelAppears when an update is available. Check the version, select it, tick the checkbox and confirm. The panel is unavailable for an estimated 1–3 minutes. Wait for the update/reload message and check the version. A failed update attempts an automatic rollback; check its result.
Roll BackRead the notice: the current version is removed and the single backup can only be used once. Tick the checkbox and confirm, then check the version after reload.
Restart PanelRead the confirmation, tick the checkbox and confirm. The dashboard is unavailable for about 5–10 seconds; mates are unaffected. Wait for reload.

Update info unavailable means the version check has no current result. If the panel stays unreachable after an operation, use Dashboard access and data problems and contact support with the target, version, time and exact error.
