Choose a backup or restore method
Choose the tool that matches what you need to save or recover: conversations and settings, a program version or the whole host.
Looking for the old “Upgrades and backups” guide? Open Update and roll back versions or State backups.
How the three kinds of backup differ
| Your goal | Tool | Scope and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Recover one mate’s conversations and settings | State backups | Daily at 05:30 in the host’s time zone; 7-day default retention. Includes credentials, excludes memory and notes. AI accounts may need reconnecting. |
| Return to the mate’s version before a successful upgrade | Local Backup Versions | Kept for 5 days and usable once. Cleanup invalidates it. |
| Return to the previous dashboard version | The panel’s own version | One backup of the dashboard program. |
| Return the whole host to an earlier time | Host restore points | Covers every mate and replaces all later data and settings. Managed by the hosting provider; use available points shown on screen. |
| Keep mate data on your computer | Export data | Downloads mate data directories with some credential files and backups excluded. Not a complete migration or one-click restore bundle. |
State and version backups mainly stay on the same host. State backups can also be downloaded. Host restore points use the provider’s snapshot service.
Recover memory or notes
State backups exclude memory and notes. First check Memory and notes for a read error, a different selected mate or content that needs correction.
If a saved export contains the files you need, inspect a copy and contact support about recovery. A whole-host restore also replaces other mates’ later work; assess that scope before using it for a single note.
Before you act
- For an unresponsive mate, start with Mate not responding.
- Before restoring, check the mate or host, saved time and replacement scope. Download current content if you need to keep it.
- Before service ends, export and check your files. See Data privacy for storage and deletion requests.
